The Locke Fire Department is a 100% volunteer organization proudly serving the communities of Locke and Summerhill in Cayuga County. Our members are dedicated to providing reliable fire protection, non-transport EMS care, and a wide range of emergency services. We are committed not only to responding when emergencies happen, but also to educating, protecting, and caring for the public at all times—day or night.
With a fleet of nine apparatus, including a utility terrain vehicle (Gator), our department is equipped to handle a variety of incidents. From structure fires and motor vehicle accidents to calls in remote or hard-to-reach areas, we are prepared to respond wherever we are needed. Our coverage area includes rural communities, snowmobile trails, the Summerhill State Forest, and portions of Lake Como, presenting
unique challenges that our members train for year-round.
As a volunteer department, our firefighters, EMTs, and support personnel dedicate countless hours to training, responding to calls, and serving the community—all while balancing their regular jobs and personal lives. The Locke Fire Department takes pride in its strong commitment to service, teamwork, and community involvement, ensuring that our residents and visitors receive the highest level of care and protection possible.

Locke experienced two major fires that impacted the village over time. On April 26, 1912, a devastating fire destroyed about 30 buildings, making it one of the worst incidents in the village’s history.
Years later, On April 10, 1975, a devastating fire in Locke, NY, destroyed 11 buildings and caused approximately $650,000 in damage. The disaster began when a tractor-trailer hauling gasoline lost its brakes descending Route 90, crashed at the Route 38 intersection, and ignited. (info from Google)
